A Rochester woman now admits to intentionally drowning her infant son. The baby, Jeremiah, was immediately transported to Rochester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. While being interviewed by investigators, she reportedly "admitted to intentionally drowning her son with the goal of ending his life".
Court paperwork states Mitchell filled the tub with eight to ten inches of water, then intentionally left Jeremiah submerged in the tub alone for 1-2 hours.
Mitchell was scheduled to be arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Rochester City Court Tuesday morning, where the grand jury may have considered additional charges. A judge ordered she be held in jail without bond. When they got there, police say they found the infant, Jeremiah Mitchell. Nevertheless it is now thought that individual is the child's father who Mitchell had been fighting with.
Police say the boy's mother, 25-year-old Markiya Mitchell, admitted to intentionally drowning her infant.
Monroe County spokesman Jesse Sleezer said he could not confirm or deny whether a Child Protective Services case was linked to Mitchell and her children. The 25-year-old is also the mother of another child. Court has since been adjourned but was set to resume for a preliminary hearing Friday morning.
According to police, Mitchell also has a 7-year-old child who has been place in the care of a family member. Neighbors say police came, but no arrests.
