Sergio Garcia rates his own chances of winning the Race to Dubai

The European Tour season concludes this week at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and three men are in the running to become Europe's number one.

"It would be awesome", he said when asked if both Fleetwood and Rose fare very badly and he wins the DP World Tour Championship.

On the three-way race for the Race to Dubai title, Garcia pleaded ignorance about the possibilities. That is some way behind second-placed Justin Rose (24 per cent) and current leader Tommy Fleetwood (73).

At the Nedbank Golf Challenge at San City in South Africa last week Fleetwood was 10th and the event was won by Branden Grace. But Garcia's 2017 has been more than just his Masters triumph, logging wins at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Andalucía Valderrama Masters.

Justin Rose of England shakes hands with Ashish Bhutani during the Pro-Am. After 15 years with TaylorMade, Garcia is testing Callaway clubs for his last event of the year in preparation for changing equipment deals.

Justin Rose: The 2007 Race to Dubai Champion is now 256,737 points behind Fleetwood in the Race to Dubai, but comes in to the event in incredible form having won the WGC HSBC Champions and the Turkish Airlines Open in successive events.

Returning in 1946, the great South African Bobby Locke took the accolade based on his scoring average in 36 eligible rounds, before he was succeeded by Australia's Norman Von Nida, who remains one of the most decorated golfers from Down Under.

It will take one final big effort for the victor to emerge after a tough season, and then the players can put their feet up for a while: this is the last European Tour event of 2017, with just the co-sanctioned Hong Kong Open, Australian PGA Championship, Mauritius Open and Joburg Open to come. The tempestuous Scot, Monty, returned to the summit in 2005 during a late-career rally that saw him finish runner-up to Tiger Woods in the Open Championship at St. Andrews. Since then Garcia has added 14 European titles and 10 PGA wins to his name but the Race to Dubai crown has eluded the Spaniard. He needs to finish no worse than solo fifth to have any chance. "Excited for these last few weeks of the year", he enthused.

The par 5, 18th hole on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Alas, because the 37-year-old appeared in just 12 European Tour events, he faces a substantial deficit at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The course measures nearly 7,700-yards and the final four holes all feature water - it could be a grandstand finish on Sunday.

DP World Tour Championship: Who's in the field?

Why not buy a Now TV pass?

However, a study found that access into the events was better than anticipated - all Challenge Tour graduates got into three out of five full-field Rolex Series events - and that's expected to be as good, if not better, in 2018.
