But Will and Lauren Powers' biggest concern is for their three missing cats presumed dead - two were Guinness Book of World Record holders.
Cygnus is the domestic cat with the world's longest tail, measuring at more than 17 inches (43 centimeters).
Cygnus and Arcturus were two very special cats that held word records.
Cygnus and Arcturus - a two-year-old Savannah cat measuring 20.1 inches (53.6 cm) - became celebrities after being recognized by Guinness World Records. They also had another feline named Sirrius who did not hold any world records, but did hold a place in the couple's hearts.
The destroyed house on the 34000 block of Quaker Valley Lane in Farmington Hills only told half the story. William and his wife were able to get out safely, but he says he is anxious that the cats didn't make it. I did manage to open a few doors in hope they would run out so if anyone in the Farmington area finds a cat matching their description please notify us.
The fire chief says the fire was especially hard to fight because the fire hydrant was so far away.
Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh said the blaze is under investigation, but added that no foul play seemed to be involved. "They treat them like their kids".
Neighbors were hopeful that the cats were still alive while at the same time showing sympathy for the couple.
Crstina Eckhoff, who lives nearby, said the cats are concerning for the neighbors. "They are probably at the house next door, not far".
The Associated Press left a message Monday seeking comment from fire officials.
Once they stabilize it, they will be able to determine the cause of the fire and if the cats made it out or not.
Writing on his Facebook, Will said: 'If the death of Cygnus, Arcturus, and Sirius isn't meaningless and can help another family love their cats like we loved ours then this tragedy can have something good come from it'.
