After PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds broke Steam records and Epic saw a huge uptick in players following the launch of a Battle Royale mode for Fortnite, other developers are getting stuck into the hot new video game genre. Another victory for creative ideas and all that.
Revealing the news via blog post, it appears the new "experimental" mode will be temporary, at least for now, and come in the game's next update. I don't know that I particularly care for Crytek's style of shooters (I've never been a fan of Crysis), but that massive scale last man standing mode allows for such emergent gameplay that it constantly surprises and delights.
"Soldier, this is by far the toughest challenge of the year - the new game mode will require you to be always on the ready, it's Battle Royale". In order for Battle Royale to work, you need a big map, which is what Crytek is working on.
Indeed, PCGamesN have found footage of the Russian version of the game, where the battle royale mode is already live, and it seems that each match will have just 16 players duking it out, making it more of a battle compact, in all honesty. The free-to-play online FPS is now only available on PC following the discontinuation of support for the Xbox 360 version in 2015.
It's possible then that Warface could return to consoles if the genre addition is successful, although, with both its PC competitors hitting the Xbox console within the next month, it might be a bit too little too late for the game to secure a consistent player base. Let us know in the comments.
