Edmonton Eskimos knock Winnipeg Blue Bombers out of playoffs with win

If the Edmonton Eskimos don't rename the team before next season, the 2018 Grey Cup could be "beset by a very charged" debate about the issue, warns Mayor Don Iveson.

Winnipeg's first Métis mayor, Brian Bowman, said Wednesday he thinks there is an opportunity for "a more inclusive" name.

The Eskimos' pivot looks to keep it going when the Green and Gold visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Sunday's Western Semi-Final.

The victory is good for Edmonton's sixth in a row and sends them to their fourth straight division final. On a third and three, Winnipeg's Timothy Flanders took a direct snap but he was tackled by former Blue Bomber Cory Watson, who brought him down on the Winnipeg 40-yard line for a two-yard loss.

Regardless of anything else, Mike Reilly probably won't call 2017 memorable unless he's winning his second Grey Cup in three years at the end of the month.

It was the first playoff game the Bombers hosted in the new stadium since it opened in 2013.

The ensuing drive saw the Bombers got on the board with a 20-yard field goal after stalling out in the red zone to trail by four.

The Bombers jumped in front early in the second quarter thanks to a seven-yard touchdown catch by L'Damian Washington.

Edmonton's Sean Whyte nailed a 28-yard field to make it 10-10 at halftime.

Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly (13) throws to an open receiver against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during first half CFL western semifinal action in Winnipeg Sunday, November 12, 2017.

The cagey nature of the contest continued into the second half until C.J. Gable started an Edmonton run with just under 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Gable's TD runs were both from 15 yards out.

Then Medlock hit from 47 yards out to trail by nine heading into the final frame.

Zylstra, the CFL's leading receiver in the regular season, had a huge game with eight catches for 156 yards. Zylstra led the league this season with 1,678 receiving yards off 100 catches.

The Eskimos controlled the second half, outscoring Winnipeg by seven points. Weston Dressler caught a 20-yard TD pass at 6:58 and a two-point convert pass to Matt Coates was successful. It was their third turnover.

Dressler caught a 13-yard touchdown at the buzzer before adding the two-point convert catch.

Bowman hauled in a 42-yard pass from Reilly in the fourth quarter for his second touchdown of the game shortly before Gable posted another 15-yard touchdown run.
