Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon from South Korea for a two-night stop in the Chinese capital as part of his marathon Asia tour.
NPR's Scott Horsely, who is traveling with the president, says Trump "thanked Xi for steps China has already taken, like suspending coal purchases from North Korea, as well as severing banking ties with that country". It also lead to United Nations sanctions and increasingly hostile rhetoric from Trump.
Trump is scheduled to have lunch with United States troops deployed there.
On Wednesday, the US President is expected to deliver a speech to the South Korean Parliament before heading to China for the next leg of his trip.
Trump's visit was also the third-most talked-about topic on Chinese social media platform Weibo over the last 24 hours, trailing only the birthday of a singer in a Chinese boy band and a weekly Asian pop song chart. "As long as we stand together, that threat will never happen".

The agreement for China Aviation Suppliers Holding Co (CASC) to buy the single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft was among the more than $250 billion in agreements announced at a ceremony attended by Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The comments will be encouraging to foreign banks, asset managers and insurers, who have always been kept on the margins in China, the world's second-largest economy, by various barriers.
But Trump stopped short of castigating Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng), saying he didn't blame the country for having taken advantage of past US administrations.
"But we will make it fair and it will be tremendous for both of us", Mr Trump said.
Before taking office Mr Trump did not hold back from hostile anti-China rhetoric and he has consistently complained about the trade deficit with China, accusing it of being a currency manipulator stealing American jobs. China is reportedly a leading conduit for the illegal sale of the powerful synthetic drug fentanyl.
"China can fix this problem easily and quickly, and I am calling on China and your great president to hopefully work on it very hard", the USA leader said. Special emphasis will be placed on fentanyl.
