Bulls forward Bobby Portis publicly apologized Sunday (AEDT) for punching teammate Nikola Mirotic in a fight that occurred in practice Wednesday. Mirotic was taken the hospital, where he was treated for two facial fractures and a concussion.
This also provides some more clarity on the situation as Portis did not acknowledge whether these issues be himself and Mirotic were something that has persisted for quite some time.
I am not convinced Portis wasn't hit with a tranquilizer dart immediately before addressing the media. He's optimistic they can fix their relationship, which featured Mirotic again winning the starting power forward position over Portis during training camp.
Portis denied that losing the starting job after a strong offseason commitment with the team's offseason program factored into the decision, chalking it up several times to "just competing".
Now Portis is being suspended by the team for eight games.
Portis said Saturday that wasn't the case.
Yes, I can coexist with Niko, going forward.
Portis apologized to his teammates during Friday's practice and began the process of moving on from the episode, although that won't be so simple for the Bulls, with two important players out of the lineup. "This is not who Bobby Portis is".
Portis said he was surprised by his reaction and said that's not who he is. "I'm pretty sure we can - we just need to fix this relationship".
