Since their 59-21 beatdown of Pitt on September 16, Oklahoma State took a double-digit home loss to TCU, squeaked by Texas Tech in a game the Red Raiders had a chance to take a late lead but couldn't, and pounded winless Baylor before Saturday's less-than-impressive showing.
On Saturday, the Cowboys leaned on their defense.
After taking No. 10 Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) to overtime in a defensive battle without turning the football over, Texas (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) quarterback Sam Ehlinger picked the absolute worst time to throw away his first turnover of the day.
Oklahoma State improves to 6-1 (3-1 Big 12) and will face West Virginia next Saturday before meeting No. 9 Oklahoma on November 4. Last week the Longhorns overcame a 20-point deficit to take a 24-23 lead on Oklahoma before dropping the game 29-24. Even if they failed to get the first down, they still a short field goal to likely send the game into a second overtime (granted, nothing is easy with #CollegeKickers). Gundy said. "He should have won it. So (Saturday) the offense stumbled over their own feet, couldn't make a play, and the defense did".
West Virginia entered today at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play before a game against Baylor in Waco. They haven't dropped out of the national playoff picture, either. Texas held Oklahoma State without a touchdown for the entire second half and overtime. The Longhorns had chances down the stretch to win it, but the Cowboys came up with key stops time and again.
Herman had a reputation for pulling off upsets at his last job in Houston. He's now 0-3 against ranked teams at Texas, but all three of those losses could've gone the other way.
Texas has most of its difficulty on offense, Herman's specialty as a former offensive coordinator. Ehlinger floated away a ball to a spot in the end zone with no receiver in the area, and Ramon Richards secured the interception to seal a 13-10 victory for Oklahoma State. Recievers Marcell Ateman and James Washington gained 87 and 32 yards, respectively, marking the first time in five games both failed to reach 100. Texas did score its only touchdown on the drive, though.
