Whether this will be an outstanding footnote in tech industry history or another damp squib among the many "awesome" saccharine-filled features, experiences and apps to emerge from Silicon Valley conference halls lately remains to be seen.
"And more people in VR means more people to play, connect, and share with".
On his speech, he said, "We want to get a billion people in virtual reality". It's massive because it offers so much simplicity, and without the need for a cable or a mobile phone.
But just days later he dusted himself down and, as if nothing had happened, delivered what could be the most pivotal moments in the evolution of VR.
With shipments due early next year, the Oculus Go will be priced at $199, which is only slightly higher than the low end Gear VR offering at $129. The bundle comes with a Rift VR headset, a pair of Oculus Touch controllers, three facial interfaces, dedicated customer support, and warranties.
Facebook is targeting the device to be more than just a gaming experience with the ability to watch movies, concerts and meet friends in the realm of VR.
The new generation of controllers is set to be featured on this upcoming device. With a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, the display is a fast-switch LCD screen.
The standalone VR headset also ships with integrated spatial audio, Oculus VR added in the blog post. There is also a 3.5-mm standard headphone jack for personal use. The company says the Go is "binary-compatible" with apps for the Gear VR. It will be able to run the same VR as the Samsung Gear, leading Blau to conclude the Go will rely on the same Android operating system as the Gear and likely include similar processors as Samsung phones. They sport infrared LEDs that work with tracking sensors on the headset and allow natural and unrestricted movement. Though, no release date has been announced, project "Santa Cruz" could herald the company's next phase in terms of VR technology.
Oculus also provided a look at progress being made on a "Santa Cruz" stand-alone virtual reality headset prototype revealed at the company's developers conference here a year ago.
"We all have limits to our reality".
