He landed at Orlando International Airport just after 5 p.m., where he walked into the terminal and a center located there dedicated to helping Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria. Walking table to table, the vice president met Everlinda Burgos, who had arrived earlier in the day from her home in Naranjito. Trump never made it out of San Juan, so he missed seeing the worst of Maria's destruction.
President Donald Trump went to Puerto Rico on Tuesday, a memorable trip in which - among other things - he tossed paper towels to hurricane victims gathered to collect emergency supplies.
"We're anticipating the people that are coming here from the island are going to be here for months waiting for power and waiting for it to become a more normal place to live, so we think we need longer-term solutions, but we also know our housing market is very tight", she said.
Promising to help, Pence said the administration would "work every part of it and help Puerto Rico recover".
Then, with her permission, he gave her a hug.
Pence announced that he and his wife would be traveling to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday.
Pence was joined by Florida Sens. The vice president will meet with Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp, visit churches in both locations and take an aerial Virgin Islands tour.
Pence thanked the congregation and pledged commitment to relief efforts.
"Puerto Rico will come back, as the president says, better and stronger than ever before", Pence said, adding with a touch of Spanish, "because we are all unidos por Puerto Rico".
