Mini first ventured into electric cars about a decade ago with its Mini E. This vehicle is said to have laid foundations at the BMW Group for the development of electric mobility solutions to be brought to production readiness.
Mini Electric Concept isn't the most original name, but that's what it is. It took until this year however, for Mini to launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in the form of the 2017 Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4.
No technical details of the Electric concept have yet been released, MINI only stating that the auto 'combines a drive system that is always quick off the mark with a precision-tuned suspension - the drivetrain and performance characteristics offer an enthralling drive on both city streets and country roads that is typical of the MINI product range'. The drivetrain and performance characteristics are aimed at offering an enthralling drive on both city streets and country roads.
Electric fever has struck Mini, hence its new Mini Electric Concept. Identifying features on the exterior include the contrasting silver and yellow colour scheme that is reminiscent of the earlier MINI E, as well as the distinctive E badge. The front end is adorned with a hexagonal radiator grille and the familiar round headlights. In fact, because the concept requires so little cooling, the radiator grille is closed to further improve aero. The front apron's simulated "air intakes" are also sealed. The car's silhouette is composed of taut, clean-cut surfaces which produce a minimalist impression.
BMW Group Design senior vice president Adrian van Hooydonk said: "The MINI Electric Concept is a quintessential MINI - compact, agile, simply the ideal companion for everyday driving".
The dark-coloured 19-inch wheels are in an asymmetrical design, with low-drag aerodynamic inserts made using a 3D printer. The recessed louvred surfaces in the air intakes were also produced using a 3D printing method.
The new electric concept auto has been created to be an urban vehicle. But what Mini has stated very clearly is that a production-spec version is due to arrive in 2019.
