'Hitman's Bodyguard' Wins Weekend Box Office, 'Logan Lucky' Debuts to Slow Start

Jackson and Ryan Reynolds movie, The Hitman's Bodyguard (which can also be called Deadpool meets Nick Fury), topped the box office this weekend with $21.6 million.

Set to post $5.1 million in second weekend receipts (cume now $17.7 million), "The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature" falls two places to #5. In doing so, the Lionsgate release is on track to top last week's victor, Annabelle: Creation, and fellow newcomer Logan Lucky, Steven Soderbergh's first film in four years.

While Hitman's Bodyguard received mixed reviews by critics, its star power likely drew audiences this weekend - which was a slow one for the summer without any blockbuster competition in theaters.

Starring Reynolds as an "executive protection agent" tasked with safely escorting a top assassin (Jackson) to testify against a dictator, The Hitman's Bodyguard is poised to slightly exceed industry projections, which had pegged it in the $15 million to $20 million range.

Critics, however, loved Soderbergh's first film since his self-proclaimed retirement four years ago, giving it a 93 percent rating.

The latest in the Conjuring world from Warner Bros., Annabelle's box office earnings this week dropped 56% from its debut weekend of $35 million.

The Bleecker Street production stars Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Riley Keough in an unconventional heist comedy, with a sort of dysfunctional "Oceans 11"-style team planning a huge robbery at a NASCAR race". Check out the August 18-20 figures below.
