Top security advisors of S. Korea, US discuss Korean Peninsula issues

President Trump warned North Korea's leader that if he threatens the United States, he will "be met with the fire and fury like the world has never seen".

"I hope they're going to fully understand the gravity of what I said", the president told reporters.

Trump added that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has "disrespected our country greatly", adding, "with me, he's not getting away with it".

That warning came hours after China said it would not assist North Korea if it launched a first strike that threatened USA soil and the US retaliated. Citing U.S. intelligence, the Washington Post has reported that Pyongyang may already have miniaturized a warhead that can fit inside long-range ballistic missiles, like the two it tested last month.

The warm words exchanged Friday night in the USA masked underlying tensions between Beijing and Washington over how to deal with the errant regime in Pyongyang.

But it also said that if the US and South Korea attacked North Korea to force regime change, then China must intervene to prevent it.

"Guam is the largest island between Hawaii and the Philippines and it has a natural deep seawater port", says Robert Underwood, former Guam delegate to the U.S. Congress and current president at the University of Guam. But if the U.S and South Korea try to carry out strikes and overthrow the North Korean government, "China will prevent them from doing so".

Mr Trump had earlier brandished a threat of unleashing "fire and fury" on Pyongyang, then noted Thursday maybe that statement "wasn't tough enough".

Hours after Trump made his comments at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., North Korea said it was "examining" a strike on American forces on the Pacific island of Guam.

Coverage of this week's nuclear war threats in most American news outlets has elevated the level of concern, San Nicolas said. It has diplomatic traction.

ITV News Senior International Correspondent John Irvine said it would be an "an extremely provocative act" to fire missiles towards Guam, a U.S. site which hosts a major military base.

"U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called for the peaceful denuclearization of North Korea - a common goal of the global community - and stressed the importance of strengthening pressure on North Korea in diplomatic, economic terms", the South Korean spokesman said.

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said: "Unfortunately, the rhetoric in Washington and Pyongyang is now starting to go over the top".

The regime was further angered by last week's United Nations decision to increase economic sanctions against it.

As North Korea's only real ally, China has more influence than any other nation over the hermit nation. I said it yesterday. "North Korea just wants to show off its military power", Tong said in an interview with Sputnik. Discussions reportedly have focused on Americans who are jailed in the communist country and souring relations between the longtime adversaries.

The real danger of any pre-emptive U.S. strikes against North Korea's weapons' sites would be that Pyongyang might resort to using its chemical and biological weapons - and ultimately its nuclear arsenal.
