This year, Microsoft will be offering the free game development classes in a partnership with the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE). "The program will feature three unique courses, each covering a different aspect of the game development process to inspire new ways to build, create, play and transform ideas". Xbox Academy students will be able to save their games for further development on their own time.
Even if you can't take part in the Xbox Academy in NY or Sydney, you can still take part by using your Xbox One as your own game development kit.
After almost 11 years, the independent game development platform created and promoted by Microsoft, Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG), will close its doors and culminate, this year, with the process of dismantling and phasing-out that began in 2015. Every Xbox One can become a dev kit with a free app from Microsoft, and accounts that let anyone publish to Xbox One and Windows 10 start at a budget-friendly $20.
For those who are interested in attending, the first workshop will be held at the Microsoft flagship store in NY on the 20th of August, and the Sydney workshop will be held on the 25th of September.
The Sydney classroom is open for registration, with classes running from Monday September 25 to October 1.
