With only Paris and Los Angeles bidding for 2024, that essentially meant both cities would win Olympic bids, with the details to be worked out before the IOC met again to officially ratify the decision in September.
A representative for Hidalgo's office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said definitive word was expected to come when the International Olympic Committee meets in September in Lima, Peru, after several more steps in the procedure had been finalised. The IOC has assured that the program for 2028 will remain consistent with that in 2024 meaning the LA project wouldn't need to change much for the subsequent edition of the Games.
The committee said the 2024 and 2028 games would be held in L.A. and Paris - but it didn't specify who would host which year.
Paris is widely seen as the favorite for 2024.
The French capital and California metropolis both put forward bids that fulfilled the IOC's top priorities: cost-cutting, environmental protection and assuring long-term benefits for the host community. Tokyo, Japan, will host the 2020 Summer Olympics. Paris has not hosted a Summer Olympics since 1924.
"We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners", Bach said.
So, to offset the cost, the IOC has pledged to give $1.8 billion to L.A.'s organizing committee for the 2028 Summer Games.
The Olympics were previously held in Los Angeles in 1984.
"This "news" has been an open secret for months, but it's not a done deal". After having no football in their city for years, now they have two franchises, the Lakers drafted a potential superstar in Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in the NBA Draft and the Dodgers might never lose another game.
