"It had nothing to do with cost".
"No. It had nothing to do with cost, it was always eight. It had to do with what was the best way to tell the story". If the season were 13 episodes, there is a chance the story could be bogged down by the minutiae of the characters interacting.
I'm a huge fan of all four shows, and I think the pacing issue was overblown. So far, critics have said the first four episodes are slow in getting the Defenders together, and the show spends too much time on explaining what everyone has been up to, which weighs the narrative down with unnecessary filler.
Early reviews for "The Defenders" have been mixed. So, the decision to make it a shorter show may possibly pay off for #Marvel in the end. We then see Stick (Scott Glenn) warning the team that a war is coming and they must be prepared.
"We haven't gotten to that place, I don't know if there will be a Defenders #2, " pointed out. "I don't know that there will be a Defenders #2", he said.
Ultimately, I don't think the series will lose anything by shortening the series, although I would love to watch five more hours of this show, I'm sure. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen. "I'm not saying that it couldn't happen, and I'm not saying that it wouldn't happen, I'm just saying I think it doesn't immediately lend itself toward, 'Oh yeah, I can see The Punisher and Luke Cage hanging out!' I think you go, 'That feels like peanut butter and asparagus".
Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones is an enjoyably cynical addition to any team (in one highlight, she breaks the tension of a scene by taking out an enemy in a brutally efficient manner), while Luke Cage (Mike Colter) brings a kind of grounded wisdom that tempers the more supernatural leanings of Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
I suppose Loeb has a point in that Punisher isn't exactly a superhero per se, but I believe he's teamed up with all the Defenders characters at one point in the comics.
Marvel's new series The Defenders drops on 18th August and, since it's not appearing on terrestrial television in SA, South African Netflix subscribers will be able to watch it at the same time as everyone else.
