The broadcaster increased revenue by 10 per cent to £12.9bn in the year to 30 June, but it was not enough to offset the impact on operating profits, which slipped six per cent from £1.57bn to £1.47bn.
Sky, which also broadcasts in its core markets of Britain and Ireland, reported full-year adjusted operating profit in line with forecasts, down 6 percent due to the higher cost of English Premier League rights and investment in the business.
Mr. Murdoch and his family are major shareholders in Fox, Sky and News Corp., the publisher of The Wall Street Journal. In an earnings report released on Thursday, the European pay-TV giant also confirmed plans to launch in Spain as the company returned to profit growth in the fourth quarter following a year of investment.
Sky's chief executive, Jeremy Darroch, described the performance as "strong" despite "market headwinds".
It added 686,000 new customers during the 12-month period to 22.5 million and crossed the five million-mark in Germany earlier this month.
Sky (SKYAY) shares slipped Thursday after slowing customer growth and increased cord-cutting in its key United Kingdom market overshadowed an otherwise positive set of full-year results.
Darroch said the company was creating 300 new technology roles to "further enhance" its capability to deploy in and out-of-home streaming platforms.
Sky would also continue to identify opportunities to reach new customers through the recently-launched new portfolio of channels and pricing to drive growth in Sky Sports UK, and Darroch said it meant to launch a "simple and affordable" over-the-top service in Spain. In the fourth quarter, Sky added 77,000 new customers and 333,000 additional products.
"We will continue to identify opportunities to reach new customers through the recently launched new portfolio of channels and pricing to drive growth in Sky Sports UK", he said. Today, we have announced that Sky Soundbox, our brand new all-in-one sound system for use with Sky Q, Sky+ and standalone TVs, will launch later this year to transform the TV sound experience for customers.
Darroch said that Sky's growth and development for 2017 was "strong" and that operating profit was "excellent" and pointed to "particularly strong" results in Germany, Austria and Italy where operating profit increased by £115M.
