Friday during his joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, President Donald Trump was asked if tapes existed of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey. In the hearing, Comey did not disclose any links between Trump advisers and alleged Russian meddling.Russia has denied such interference. The struggle will be fought on a number of levels. If one were an adult with full knowledge of the president's pre-political history and the common sense of an investigator, one might reasonably conclude that the hoper in chief was making a strong suggestion, the ignoring of which could have dead-horse-in-your-bed consequences. Why telegraph feebleness to Trump, his lawyers and a skeptical public if he's secure in his rectitude? And of course, whether Kasowitz or Trump or anyone else makes a complaint against Comey, it is ultimately up to the Justice Department to take matters from there.
Richman has been in touch with Senate judiciary through special counsel Bob Mueller's office, and that there will be movement after the weekend, a source was quoted as saying. "It's not something I'm doing now". "It's a great question", Comey replied. He's politically wounded, isolated from his own party, lacking many serious accomplishments, and faces a minefield of Russia-related investigations ahead.
But Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan appeared to sympathize with Trump. "He's new to government".
Comey handled himself like a boss, though, refusing to let comments about his imposing size overshadow the president's influence, and cracking wise about the pee tapes he hopes are out there.
Another level is the legal. They picked instead, via lawyerly parsing, at whether Trump really meant to shut down the Flynn investigation.
In an Oval Office tete-a-tete the following month, Comey said Trump pressed him to drop the FBI investigation into Flynn, who had been fired for lying to the vice president about unreported conversations with the Russian ambassador.
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) responded to the hearing afterward, "I think at this moment there's no reason to question that what the president said is what happened". Comey sees his testimony and the Senate investigations as being preliminaries to Mueller's inquiry.
"Who is out there during the Comey hearings - besides the RNC because it's their job and some campaign hacks from the campaign - who was out there?"
US President Donald Trump surprisingly refrained from tweeting during James Comey's testimony.
When a reporter again tried to explain Trump's denial of Comey's claims, Blunt cut her off. In fact, Comey's laid several "perjury traps".
Mr Comey's oral testimony gave crucial - and legally significant - insight into how he interpreted the president's words, said Alex Whiting, a Harvard Law professor and former federal prosecutor. Comey's remarkable testimony will ultimately be compared with Trump's version of events.
But if that is true, then his defense to the criminal charges is simple - he was simply unaware that intervening in an ongoing investigation and asking the FBI Director for loyalty was wrong. The US president may have other people who will testify in his favour. In other words, Christie was saying, Trump is just strutting like a slippery operator-not quite the exoneration that he may have intended.
But Comey's concentration on the president's hope may have doomed him. The Trump team will use this to portray him as something other than the squeaky-clean civil servant he claims to be. The bigger worry is that, sometime before then, it may toll for us all.
Presidents typically have to scurry to win legislative accomplishments, with the crucial time coming in the first seven months of their tenure, and Trump's ability to do so has been significantly damaged.
