'Wonder Woman' banned in Lebanon because lead actress Gal Gadot is Israeli

As franchise superhero movies based on DC Comics go, "Wonder Woman" is not half bad.

Wonder Woman, which is directed by Patty Jenkins and also stars Chris Pine and Robin Wright, has faced some backlash though, with Lebanese officials banning the movie because lead actress Gadot is an Israeli citizen.

Rucka talks to q guest host Gill Deacon about how the live-action adaptation carries on the legacy of the comic book characterization.

This movie feels far away from the often less than critically acclaimed DC Comics cinematic universe to which it is connected.

So, for women who love movies, especially movies made by women and about women, the stakes for "Wonder Woman" were high. I also wanted her blessing and I wanted her to know we're not here to do the "new" Wonder Woman.

Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is an American spy on the run, working under British intelligence to infiltrate the German army during World War I. The screenplay was written by Jenkins, Allan Heinberg and DC Films' co-head Geoff Johns, with story by Heinberg and Justice League director Zack Snyder.

Jenkins says she hopes to continue Wonder Woman's story in a follow-up film. With her scene-stealing appearance in last year's "Batman vs. Superman", it was clear Gadot could ably fulfill the duties of the hero: smart, sassy, strong, and in need of no man's aid.

In contrast Wonder Woman has received a positive response from critics and current has a 92% fresh rating from its first 150 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, while those two guys were celebrated with multiple media projects, Wonder Woman, even with her 1970s TV show, always seemed to live on the periphery. I don't want to make her into a man.

Diana (Gal Gadot) is the daughter of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, and a warrior par excellence. Gal Gadot has proven herself in Batman v Superman and with a full film behind her, she is exceptional. "That's not the most effective way to stop something from happening", she says.

Oh, and in case DC Legends players aren't aware enough that a Wonder Woman event is going on in the iOS and Android game, loading screens will feature Wonder Woman movie characters too. The film draws a huge amount of power from the character's response to her surroundings, for which Gadot proves a fruitful vessel. One where the hero (or heroine) operates in an all-too-real world, one where she can not save everyone and may even begin to wonder if anyone is worth saving.
