It is widely expected by local media that his visit would help mend the relationship between the United States and Australia rocked by President Trump who cut short his first leaders call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in January.

He said the Trump administration would work with Asean on security issues and trade and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.

His remarks appeared to allude to U.S. Vice President Mike Pence's comments, after meeting with Aso in Tokyo earlier this week, that the U.S. considered the TPP a "thing of the past".

"The people of Indonesia can be confident in the wake of this latest attack: We will not relent in our effort to end terrorism and the threat it presents to both of our peoples", Pence said at a roundtable with businessmen in Jakarta, where he was ending a two-day visit to Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Freeport Indonesia spokesman Riza Pratama said: "This visit is happening entirely independent of our current negotiations with the government of Indonesia".
