DNA was obtained from Marcotte's hands during an autopsy. DA Early said an alert state trooper in Worcester saw a man and a vehicle that matched the Marcotte murder suspect's description, and did a cheek DNA swab test that eventually led to Ortiz's arrest. The suspect was thought to have been driving a dark-colored SUV on the day of Marcotte's murder. She never came home, and her body was discovered less than a mile away on Brooks Station Road.

Marcotte grew up in Leominster and was working as an account manager for Mountain View, California-based Google in NY.
The case rocked the rural town in Central Massachusetts, generating national media attention and 1,300 tips to the hotline.
