However, Rose later failed at the first hole of the tiebreaker, where Garcia finished with a birdie, acquiring his first Green Jacket.
"It's awesome to do it on Seve's 60th birthday and to join him and Olazabal, my two idols in golf", Garcia said.
After his challenge combusted at this tournament five years ago, he said: "I don't have the thing I need to have". Obviously, this is something I wanted to do for a long time, but it never felt like a horror movie.
"The most positive thing is that I feel like I have so much room for improvement".
Sergio Garcia, of Spain, reacts after making his birdie putt on the 18th green to win the Masters golf tournament after a playoff Sunday, April 9, 2017, in Augusta, Ga.
In the end, when he needed two putts after Rose missed his putt for par. Garcia hit laser irons shots at the 14th and 15th holes to set up a birdie and an eagle, respectively, forging a tie with three holes to go.
Garcia birdied the 14th to get within one. History said the 37-year-old Spaniard would fold, as he had so often before.
And so, on what would have been the 60th birthday of his late, great compatriot Severiano Ballesteros, he found the inner strength to see off Rose at the first hole of a playoff.
Rose and Garcia started out tied for the lead.
Many expected Spieth to exorcize those demons after a surge up the leaderboard on "moving day" left him just two strokes off the lead heading into the final round at Augusta. He chipped out under the tree, hit his third shot to 15 feet and missed the par putt.
Bradley Cooper-Irina Shayk welcome their bundle of joy!
She was previously said to be relishing her first pregnancy. "They share those moments when the baby kicks and they can't wait". Russian model Irina, 31, and Bradley, 42, did not find out the baby's sex before the birth, instead opting for a surprise.
"It's been an unbelievable week, and I'm going to enjoy it for the rest of my life", said the new champion. "I've had so many good chances and either I lost them or someone has done something extraordinary to beat me.' So it did cross my mind". He never broke stride, but every few steps, he adjusted them - unbuttoning and re-buttoning them - nearly as if he wanted to make sure the feeling of wearing that jacket was real.
"I still have 20 or so left that I feel really primed and ready for". I felt cool, calm and collected.
The penultimate pairing of Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler had the star power, but the final twosome of Garcia and Rose had the staying power. Fowler shot 40 on the back side and signed for a 76. Rose, this year's runner's up, and Rory McIlroy are the only other golfers under par and the only other golfers with 26 shots of Spieth since the start of the 2014 tournament.
This was Rose's 13th top-10 finish in a major and eighth top 5. Matt Kuchar's 67 was the day's best and got him to 5 under, and Charl Schwartzel (6 under), Thomas Pieters (5 under), Paul Casey (4 under) and Kevin Chappell (3 under) all shot 68.
As the cheers surged around him during the final round, Garcia gave the energy back-smiling, pumping his fist, displaying the joyful nature of El Niño.
"I was really interested and surprised that nobody was able to make a run during the front nine", Rose said. That, of course, was the year Phil Mickelson broke his own major drought by winning the Masters in dramatic fashion.
On the 72nd regulation hole, Rose missed an eight-foot birdie putt, leaving Garcia a five-footer to win, but he pushed it wide right.
And while Garcia possessed the talent to put himself in the mix at golf's premier events - as his 22 top-10 finishes coming into this week attests - his mental toughness was questioned.
Garcia, who has been plagued by self-doubt when it came to majors, once said he did not have what it takes to be a major champion but demonstrated on Sunday during an enthralling rollercoaster battle with Rose that he does indeed possess the tools, demeanor and determination of a champion.
