Ewing's been pining for a head coaching spot in the National Basketball Association for what feels like over a decade.
Patrick Ewing is a Georgetown legend in his own right. Baseline expectations for Georgetown next season are to lose to very few Gulf Coasts, and, possibly, avoid losing to DePaul for the third time in five seasons. Georgetown reached the NCAA Tournament eight times during Thompson's stint, including a Final Four appearance in 2006-07 when the club went 30-7. Ewing attended Georgetown back when John Thompson was forming it into the national power it would become today. It's nearly ridiculous that in a league that goes through coaches as quickly as the National Basketball Association does Ewing was never able to even get a shot as National Basketball Association head coach.
The greatest player ever to don Blue and Grey, Ewing takes over a 14-18 team from previous year, one that finished ninth (6-13) in the ten team BIG EAST.
BREAKING: Georgetown has hired Patrick Ewing as head coach, a source confirms.
Ewing, who ranks eighth in NBA history in blocked shots, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.

The move would allow them to compete with the likes of Google and Facebook in the lucrative digital advertising market. During floor debate, she said, "Republicans want this (private) information to be sold without your permission".
In announcing the hire, Georgetown called Ewing "the greatest men's basketball player to ever don the Blue (and) Gray". In fact in 2014, the beloved New York Knicks, the same Knicks were Ewing dominated inside the paint, overlooked the star center in favor of newly retired point guard Derek Fisher. Ewing undoubtedly has the elder Thompson's approval.
He was the college player of the year in 1985.
Ewing will now be in charge of an entire program, and it will be a year-long job that involves recruiting on top of coaching and preparing. It can be a mistake to try to recapture past glory by making a move like this, but in this case, Ewing has proven that he deserves a head coaching job.
"To hire a head coach with this depth of coaching experience and personal achievements is tremendous", athletic director Lee Reed said. Both schools are in the Big East Conference.
Ewing served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards (2002-03), Houston Rockets (2003-06) and the Magic (2007-12). In the 1985 Final Four, three of the teams were from the Big East - Mullin's St. John's, Ewing's Georgetown, and Ed Pinckney's Villanova (the unlikely winner).
