Ottawa County has once again claimed the title of healthiest county in MI.
The authors of the foundation's annual report from its County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program noted a dramatic uptick in premature deaths in the USA due largely to "unintentional injuries", which include accidental drug overdoses and vehicle crashes.
Caulton-Harris told 22News that the area's public health community will meet Friday at 10:00 a.m.at the municipal offices to discuss ways to improve their ranking.
The two counties at the bottom of Kansas' health rankings this year share a great deal: high rates of poverty and smoking, and difficulty accessing providers. The county also has a high number of children in poverty, almost 20 percent. Death trends from 1997 to 2014 showed 39 counties saw improvements while five worsened and the rest saw no change.
Numerous health factors and outcomes across the three western-most counties are on-par, such as adult smoking and obesity, access to exercise opportunities, and the percentage of people who are uninsured.
Researchers found that among those aged 25 to 44, not only were drug overdose deaths up in 2015, but premature deaths as well. Last year's report cited 17 percent uninsured in the county.
The health factors rankings are similar.
MaineHealth, which includes the Franklin County Health Network, issues its own Health Index Report, studying some of the state's most significant health priorities, including childhood immunizations, preventable hospitalizations, cardiovascular and cancer deaths, as well as prescription drug abuse.
Almost every county nationwide is included in the rankings, which compare the locale to the rest of its state and top performers across the nation.

Residents of Labette County in southeast Kansas took the unenviable title of Kansas' least-healthy people from Wyandotte County in the 2017 County Health Rankings released Wednesday. The statewide rate is 18 percent. Tolland county also has a signifantly low obesity rate due to the high number of accessability for excersise opportunities.
