Named in honor John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, the New Glenn rocket builds upon Blue Origin's early tests of the smaller, suborbital New Shepard, named for first-American-in-space Alan Shepard.
"Eutelsat is one of the world's most experienced and innovative satellite operators, and we are honored that they chose Blue Origin and our New Glenn orbital launch vehicle", Bezos said in a statement.
Eutelsat CEO Rodolphe Belmer said Tuesday that the deal with Blue Origin follows their "longstanding strategy of innovation that drives down the cost of access to space and drives up performance". Industry associates are looking at an intense competition between two billionaires.Blue Origin has effectively launched and landed its rocket, The New Shepard, five times in less than a year.
BE-4 is already more than four years into development, fully funded, and will be flight qualified by 2017 - at least two years ahead of the alternative engine option. Jeffrey Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the space company Blue Origin are aiming for such a "difficult and worthy objective". That system is being developed to send humans into deep space.
Blue Origin plans to land its lunar vehicle -Blue Moon - on the moon's south pole, Shackleton Crater due to its constant sunlight to power the vessel, and a water source. "This can only be good news for the profitability and sustainability of our industry".
Ultimately, Bezos hopes to refine the reusability of Blue Origin's rockets to dramatically lower launch costs. Bezos has said he has poured more than $500 million of his own money into it - but has received relatively little outside revenue.
Train hits bus carrying Texas tourists in MS ; 4 die
City officials said Tuesday that the tour bus was transporting 48 people, who were headed to Boomtown Biloxi Casion from Bay St. The bus was apparently stationary on the tracks when the 52-carriage train slammed into it in Biloxi on Tuesday, police said.
The mission to launch Eutelsat's satellite to geostationary orbit would come in 2021 or 2022.
Dr. McDowell, who teaches at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, made clear that he had "full confidence" that SpaceX would succeed in sending space tourists around the moon, but suggested 2020 might be a more likely deadline.
To accompany the announcement of the new hardware, Blue Origin put together a concept video showing what the final product will look like.
And while low-Earth orbit may not seem as exciting as the moon, Bezos's goals are no less ambitious than Musk's. The chief executive officer of Amazon.com Inc. said Blue Origin now has over 1,000 employees.
Eutelsat will launch its next satellite at the end of April using an Ariane 5 rocket. Bezos has even reserved a parking spot near the Shackleton Crater on the South Pole, which has constant sunlight and hydrogen supply for the rocket fuel.
