A powerful nighttime quake in the southern Philippines killed at least six people and injured more than 120, with officials combing through cracked buildings and nearby towns Saturday to check on the damage and other possible casualties.
The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km about 13 km east of the city of Surigao, the USGS said.
Residents on the island of Mindanao were forced to evacuate their homes following a 6.7 magnitude quake that hit just 13 kilometers east of the city of Surigao.
Relief and rescue operations are underway, officials said.
The Office of Civil Defense-Caraga Region said as reported by local media the six casualties were caused by falling debris and collapsed walls.
Earlier media reports put the death toll at 3, saying that at least 7 were injured.

A total of 109,501 family food packs (FFPs) worth more than P42.2 million, and food and non-food items worth more than P124 million are on standby, ready to be distributed if affected areas need augmentation.
"The shaking was so strong I could hardly stand", coast guard personnel Rayner Neil Elopre said.
