Unfortunately, the beauty of this metaphor didn't land with the Academy, since Arrival was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Amy has received nods in the Best Actress category at a series of top awards shows, and will compete for a prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday (29Jan17). But it is. Sandra Bullock broke her own personal-best opening weekend record six times in a row between 2007 and 2015, but she still had to "gender-swap" Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.'s Our Brand is Crisis (the decade's most prescient movie, natch) to get a decent leading role. As Melissa Silverstein put it on Twitter, "gets eight Oscar noms but the woman who held it together gets ignored". With Adams out, Meryl Streep cruised into the picture and snagged her 20th career nomination, thanks in no small part to her fiery Golden Globes speech, which was delivered just days before the voting deadline.
Of, course, Adams wasn't the only person misplaced on the list. When the odd alien ships descend, sending the world - particularly its military leaders - into a frenzy, Banks is one of the few who keeps her cool.
Not only did Amy receive a shocking zero nominations, she also had her Oscar snub brought to everyone's attention in the most awkward way. Both relationships, we gradually understand, are laced with quiet tragedy.
Mary Tyler Moore of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' Dead at 80
Since the surgery, it has been reported that her mobility declined, and she suffered from heart and kidney problems. As Laura Petrie, Moore proved herself to be a very gifted comedic actress opposite her onscreen husband, Van Dyke.
It is a wholly commercial sci-fi drama, one rooted in characters and ideas with just enough trailer-friendly spectacle, that doesn't require a female lead by virtue of history or genre.
Bening is no stranger to being nominated for an Oscar: she's received four nominations since 1991.
There's no such moment in Arrival - no massive outpouring of emotion, nothing that shouts, "Hey, I'm acting here" in large capital letters. If there's one thing Hollywood loves more than awards and money, it's a comeback story.
"They're so supportive of first filmmakers, they're so supportive of young talent and they're so good at continually funding people before they break out as opposed to, I think, the more senescence system we have in English Canada where we're funding the people who have long since broken out and not those that are up-and-coming". (And you can count on one hand the number of times a Pixar film hasn't gotten a best animated feature nomination and still have fingers left over.) Instead, the far lesser-known French-Swiss stop-motion animated film "My Life as a Zucchini" scored some recognition.
