Musk urges drivers to stay cautious and alert, though, since the update is new.
Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk strongly urges caution to current Tesla owners, suggesting they bring their vehicle to a Tesla technician to modify camera angles to make better use of the new software. Musk announced this enhanced autopilot system at the beginning of January, and with this most recent update, all Tesla HW2 cars will be capable of operating autonomously in a range of conditions, thanks to a combination of cameras and ultrasonic sensors that detect the cars' surroundings.
CEO Elon Musk posted a series of tweets on Saturday, mapping an update schedule that is more often seen among smartphone makers than traditional automakers.
It's official: if you own a new Tesla, you can start trying out improved Autopilot features.
As Autopilot becomes available to HW2-equippped Teslas, only certain features will be activated. However, Tesla has not revealed when it expects to do the same with the rest of the new vehicles. Musk said the software and algorithms needed to provide that capability would roll out over time, without elaborating.
But manufacturers must also design their technology "with the inattentive driver in mind", looking at how drivers actually behave when using the technology, rather than just how they should behave, Thomas explained.

Owners now have access to Traffic Aware Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Autosteer. Musk promises that limit will be raised soon, and owners will soon enjoy other improvements that will leapfrog their vehicles ahead of earlier versions, not to mention the competition: auto lane changing, auto highway exiting, and more sophisticated self-parking.
Beginning late past year Tesla began equipping its vehicles with a suite of cameras, radar and sonar sensors, as well as a state-of-the-art Nvidia computing system to give the vehicles the hardware needed to drive themselves.
